EETF: Wind Diesel Battery Hybrid Kwgillingok

Project Overview

Intelligent Energy Systems(IES) will demonstrate the use of ABB smart inverters and high performance vehicle-format lithium ion batteries to provide short term energy storage i the Kwigillingok High Penetration Wind System. The addition of the battery energy storage will allow extended periods that the diesel generators will not be required to be running.

Project Objectives

This project aims to evaluate and implement power management methods that optimize how the wind, diesel generator, and battery components work together to provide constant power. Varying the size of the battery and it's impact on the system will also be evaluated.

ABB is a company who has been producing electronics equipment for over a hundred years. They produce different electric equipment ranging from electric car charging stations to renewable energy systems.
Another technology used is lithium ion batteries. These batteries have been used in a variety of different situations including cellphones, power tools, and electric cars.

Administration of Funds

The Alaska Energy Authority has been placed in charge of administration for the Emerging Energy Technology Fund projects. More information can be found on their website here
